“Look So Pretty” feels less like a song crafted in the traditional way – hooks, melody, groove – though it does contain plenty of all of those, this is pop after all, but more a dense weave of emotions and feelings, expressions and outpourings of heart and soul translated into musical tones and sonic textures.
Obviously, you can listen conventionally and hear spacious beats, pulsing bass lines, and myriad beguiling sonics. You also notice lots of space, space for additional atmospheres to form in the musical folds. But I suggest that a listener switches off such everyday approaches, succumbs to Ally Bakst’s musical charms, and let them merely wash over you, encompass you, become one with you.
Pop it may be, dark, emotive, alternative pop at that, but it is pop made of seduction and sophistication, pop that confidently and slowly moves with the listener rather than asks them to try to keep up, pop that deftly and delicately dances them around the room, elegant, sonically eloquent and, for all its reserve and understament, all embracing.
Pop perhaps, but a new strand, a new strain, pop that does everything asked of it, only with one tenth of the effort. How can you not simply fall head over heels with this tantalising, and indeed tantalisingly gorgeous, song? The epitome of cool? I’d say so.
