A simple and to-the-point love letter. That is what you get from the new one from Aluminum Boys. “favoritE daYs” (I’m sure there is a valid reason for the woeful disregard for the rules of capitalization, so I’ll let that go) is a lovely, lilting track that drifts past on indie grooves and slight countryfied moves, understatement and effective pedal notes, just making its heartfelt point without too much fuss.
It’s a celebration of love, or perhaps just friendship, but certainly appreciation, talking about the simple pleasures of spending time with someone special. Even when additional sounds seem to cocoon the song, it is through the addition of warm textures and more intricate layers rather than sonic weight for its sake. The music remains as accessible as the sentiment it carries in its lyrics.
It’s a song that understands that it is enough to make a simple and sweet point and do so without any undue histrionics or heightened sonics; because of this, there is something of a slow-building grandeur about the song, the ability to move effortlessly, incrementally and smoothly upwards so that it is only in hindsight that the listener notices how far they have traveled along a certain sonic path.
This is the second time I have used the phrase “less is more” today when writing about music, which goes to show what an important and effective concept it is.
