Amy Field - Universe (self-released)

6 July 2025

There is something of the golden age of blues and soul singers echoing at the heart of “Universe”, not to mention a hint of the Tex-Mex border sound running through the guitars, and yet, the overall sound is unmistakably now. Of course, any sound, style, or song can, to a large degree, only ever be built upon what has gone before, finding influence and inspiration in the past. And whilst “Universe” is the sound of both Amy Field and guitarist Robby Hodge doing precisely that, it is also the sound of them making music, not just the present, but beating a path to a fascinating future.

Lyrically, an intriguing question is posed here. If everything in the universe is connected, if we are, in some way, all one, if, as some people say, if you know how to ask the universe for your heart’s desire, it will deliver, then why can’t I get what I want?

It’s a great song, one that starts in wonderfully nostalgic blues, jazz, and lounge understatement and ends in blistering, forward-thinking, alt-rock crescendos.

And it’s a song out of time, both timeless and timely, it echoes the classic styles of the past, creates the perfect sound for the here and now, and lays the foundations for a rich and rewarding sonic future. And it does all that in four minutes flat!
