Andrea Pizzo and the Purple Mice - Hidden Figures (Purple Mice)

23 January 2025

Titularly inspired, one would imagine, by the film of the same name, “Hidden Figures,” takes a look at those people in the scientific and technological worlds who have never received their due level of respect and appreciation. It’s not the usual subject matter for a dreamscape-indie-pop song, but they make their point eloquently without making the song sound anything other than smooth and sublime and infectious.

Skittering along on a ticking beat and shimmering groove, the song employs sweet harmonies and digital dexterity, sonic weaves, and musical washes to create an incredible alternative pop platform as we follow the thoughts of one of those Hidden Figures sifting through the numbers and marveling at the elegance of mathematics, the beauty of science and the ushering in of the future.

This is dream pop at its sweetest, recalling everything from the delicacy of Kate Bush to the mercurial sounds of early synth-pop pioneers. Minimal, electronic beats provide a metronomic drive, and around this, a clockwork pattern of delicious digitalia spins and spirals, a song about the quest for the future and sounding like it is indeed from the future itself.

It isn’t often that pop music, for want of a better word, is intelligent and has something this important to say. This is certainly no ordinary music. But then Andrea Pizzo and the Purple Mice is no ordinary band.
