While the sense of desperation and despair lingers in every line of this new one from Anna Josephine, something else is at work here that balances out those lows. Despite the poignancy and sadness that run through these reflective lyrics, the upward swell of the music, the buoyancy, and the lilt give the song a defiant, anthemic quality. This is the sound of grace in the face of adversity, writ large.
Feeling lonely in a relationship is perhaps one of the worst places to find yourself, especially if that feeling is driven to new heights by cruel words and a lack of empathy. Being alone is always better than being lonely.
Sadly, “Care At All” is a song that is all too familiar. The words may come from a particular and personal place; they may be intimate and from one person’s experience, but they are universally relatable. Everyone can see part of their own story reflected in them to some degree.
But the great thing about the song is that it doesn’t wallow in its self-pity in the way that lesser songwriters might be drawn to do. “Care At All” might be a song of regret, but it is also an anthem for change. It is the sound of someone recognising the situation and deciding they don’t deserve to be treated this way. It is the sound of someone making a stand, moving on, or at least preparing to, the sound of realisation and defiance.
This is the rallying cry for everyone who has got to the point where they can say, enough is enough.
