Anna Josephine - Take My (Grooveberry Records)

29 July 2024

One of my favourite songs is the gorgeous and grief-filled “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, a song that is both haunting and heavenly. I only mention this because “Take My,” the new one from Anna Josephine, takes a theme similar to that often-misunderstood 90’s classic. Love and longing, devotion and surrender are common themes in love songs, but like the aforementioned song, “Take My” examines the darker extreme of those emotions, that point where another person can so entrance you that you are willing, or at least compelled, to sacrifice your very being, your personality, your uniqueness, your very identity for love. And not just love, but, in this case, unrequited love.

Around these tragic vocals, Anna Josephine gathers a sonic storm of Morricone-esque soundscapes and electronic textures, dark vocal chants, and beats that drive things along in a gentle gallop and build the required momentum for the song to climb anthemic heights for its final crescendo.

It’s a song embued with plenty of musical dynamic and intrigue, ebbing and flowing between its shaded understatements and more groove-driven explosions of energy. Even in its more euphoric moments, it retains intrigue, a sense of melancholy, and the dark, deadly desires that lay at the song’s heart.

This is the third single I have written about from Anna Josephine, the third time that she has produced something unique and full of beautiful flavors whilst staying within the alt-folk-indie-pop bracket, and the third time she has made me say, I can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next.
