Annakye - Colours (self-released)

16 April 2024

“Colours” could well be described as a song of two halves. (Although mathematically, more like a third and two thirds, but let’s not get pedantic.) Starting in the minimal and understated sonic lowlands of the ballad, a place of heartfelt lyrical emotion, all shimmering sonics and drawn-out vocal lines, it then suddenly, almost violently, changes its nature.

Heralded by a short guitar motif and rising sonic tensions, it proceeds to explode into…well, pop-punk, alternative rock, punk proper…take your pick. This was the problem I had with Annakye when writing about their earlier single “Headstart,” although problem is perhaps too strong a word, but so deftly drawn is their music, bordering any number of the heavier genres, that sticking a label on them or easily pigeon-holing their sound proves almost impossible. Still, it’s a good problem to have…if it is indeed a problem at all.

So, as “Colours” spirals around pulling in punk energies, alternative rock swagger, punk-pop buoyancy, rock dynamics and metal weight, grungy abrasiveness and even alt-pop infectiousness, it is all things to all people…and by people, I mean discerning music fans, of course.

And that is the art of it. Why confine yourself to this sound or that tribe when you can dance deftly across, through, above and beyond all of them, meet any number of expectations, tick all the boxes and still come away with a song built with authenticity and integrity? Why indeed?
