Many artists love to list their influences and inspirations and tell us all about the bands that they sound like as a way of helping us lazy journalists get a grip on things. But more often than not, those For Fans Of pointers and _if you like that, you’ll like this _ listings are more about what the bands wished they sounded like than what they are actually capable of. Often, but not always. Of course, you have to be a bit skeptical when a band suggests that they sound not unlike classic era Fleetwood Mac, but Annie Minogue Band actually does!
“Now!” is quite a breathtaking and beguiling song. Firstly, it really does capture that legendary band’s ability to marry prime-time rock music with poised pop accessibility—acoustic guitars chime under more robust salvos, the engine room drives everything perfectly and in an unfussy yet energetic fashion, and the vocals are seductive and sincere. There’s also one particular guitar drop right near the start of the song, which, back in the day, Lindsey Buckingham would have wrestled you bodily to the ground to get his hands on.
Add to that a set of poetic and poignant lyrics, ones that consider the growing social and environmental concerns of the population and seek to speak truth to the powers-that-be, you know, those elected (though often unelected) people who are supposed to have our best interests at heart.
Annie Minogue and her sonic posse are more than merely a Mac-infused band, and certainly not simply riding the coattails of the past. Still, it does speak volumes about a band that they set their benchmarks so high, especially when they demonstrably pull things off this brilliantly!
