Depending on which direction you approach “Knives,” from, the new single from Anxiety Attack, you are likely to experience a different facet of their music—a bit like holding a gemstone up to the light and marveling at the myriad colors it throws out. Their sound is unashamedly rock, but it is a mercurial blend of several sub-genres and styles.
Pushing the gemstone analogy to breaking point, as the light filters through, we find a solid base of classic rock groove. Turn it another way, and you notice the outsider attitude of the alternative rock set. Turn it again, and a denser, grungier hue appears, one that slowly blends and merges into a post-rock wall of noise. The more you turn, the more is revealled.
But this is more than just the sonic equivalent of a bunch of pretty colors. There is a brilliant dynamic to the song, too, one set up by the ebb and flow between those abrasive walls of noise and more understated interludes, anthemic, sky-scraping vocals, and more delicate guitar motifs.
As a taster of their album Decent, it does the job perfectly, offering an intriguing sample of the larger work and rock fans of any preference will want to use this as a stepping stone, compelled to check out the other nine songs that make up that album.
