I like a good pun; as you will have already worked out, the song title is a clever play on good old Lewis Carroll’s most famous creation. I also like confident three-minute pop songs, artists that can pack a punch, and songs that blur the lines between pop and rock music. “Allison Wonderland” ticks all of those boxes too.
Blending the themes of delusion, escape from the real world, and the search for the perfect partner Apricity weaves a tale of a woman who dreams of her ultimate relationship and, as she fantasizes about such dreams coming true, slowly retreats into an imaginary world, one that keeps her detached from everything that matters.
But if the themes found in the song border on darker designs and deep philosophical questions, the music is less complicated to unravel. Punchy pop rock which takes a Vorpal Sword to the established generic boundaries so that it can take the infectiousness and groove of one genre and blend it with the power and poignancy of the other. The result is a song accessible but deep, punchy yet poised, incendiary but also infectious.
Imagine if Shirley Manson, Avril Lavigne, The Mad Hatter, and The Jabberwocky formed a pop-punk band. Yes, that.
