Arrows of the Sun - Labyrinth (self-released)

28 December 2023

It’s been a good day for artists with a local-ish connection. Firstly, an alt-rocker with family ties to my home town, now a band from thirty minutes down the road. The world does often seem like a small place.

Arrows of the Sun take a wonderful blend of folk vibes and acoustic rock energy, plus no small amount of mystical eastern washes and seem to build a new musical world from just these delicate, yet deft, musical strands.

But, as is often the way with music that is this spacious and seemingly simple, this supple and subtle, it is to the lyrics that we must look to find the real treasure. Not that I don’t appreciate what they have created here, but just one cursory listen to the lyrics, and you will understand the hidden depths that there are to be explored in its poetic and metaphorical charms.

Using the imagery taken from the story of Theseus as he travels far away from home, unravels the clue, in both the ancient and modern sense of its meaning, and battles the Minotaur, Arrows of the Sun spin a yarn of fathers and sons, of how, no matter how we rally against it, we are often more alike than different, and how we carry those hereditary traits, those “malignant strings” with us throughout our lives.

The best music of this kind – indie-folk, folk-rock, rock-roots – call it what you will, is the stuff that implores you to dive head-first into its eloquent messages and elegant meanings. Never have I held my breath for so long, never have I dived as deep as I just have whilst unravelling, pondering and relating to the lyrical threads of this song.
