If you take the classic dream pop sound – ethereal and ambient sonics, drifting vocals and music driven by space and understatement – and push it through a funky soul filter, this adding graceful grooves and gentle infectiousness, you find yourself in a very unique and singular place, one that is hard to find, one not unlike the fountain of youth, only flowing with sonic waters. And if you do manage to find your way to such hallowed and heavenly ground, you will find yourself in the company of Asta Bria, perhaps currently the sole (or should that be soul) occupant of that realm.
Her latest single, “Our Bible,” is all of those things I have listed above, all those and more. If you are one of those people who likes to or indeed needs to, assign labels to things, how about “ethereal soul”…you’ll be hard pushed to find that section in your local record store, but it’s about as good a soundbite as I can offer.
Soulful guitar licks merge with cascading sonics, pianos spaciously wander through, and vocals move from the understated and intimate to echoing the sounds of angelic choirs as required.
