Atlas Rivers - The Vanishing (self-released)

2 December 2024

Following on from their debut single, “Towards The Sun,” the new one from Atlas Rivers has a really interesting and exciting vibe at work. Indie, rock, and perhaps indie-rock are sometimes challenging arenas to find somewhere new to take music, with so much ground already being covered, but with “The Vanishing,” this Manchester, UK, three-piece gives us something beguiling.

The first thing that strikes me is the wonderful, and wonderfully unexpected, R.E.M. vibe that opens the song up. Not the quirky college rock of their eighties output but the slicker, more accessible, mainstream sound of the following decade. But Atlas Rivers are nothing if not their own men, and they soon blend these indie touches with their own brand of big, anthemic rock.

But, even while aiming for the sky, their rock sound is also full of more than just big guitars, volume, and velocity, still retaining some jangling tones and indie textures even as it sonically kicks arse and lays waste all around.

There is nothing new under the sun, they say, so all you can do is learn from the past, take note of its influence and infusions, and put them together in new and exciting ways. And that is what we find Atlas Rivers doing here.

“The Vanishing” is a song reminiscent of what has gone before, to a certain, small degree, but definitely with its eye on a bright new future. Atlas Rivers know where their music comes from, but are only focused on where it is going. Perfect.
