Taken from their ep The Weight to be Honest, which will drop soon, “Wicked Game” is one of those songs that takes an honest look at life, particularly that part that involves love, longing, and loss, the buzz of making a connection, and the almost inevitable crash when that relationship fails to live up to the potential you saw in it.
We’ve all been there, probably more times than we would care to mention, and that is what makes the song so compelling; we can all see some aspect of ourselves playing out in the lyrics.
What also makes the song so accessible is its deft blend of nu-metal grooves and more anthemic classic rock moves, its punkish attitude, and slightly emo-infused sentiments. You could say that, for anyone into rock music, there is something here to tick most boxes, no matter which part of the rock and roll spectrum you favor.
Perhaps what makes “Wicked Game” stand out most is the song’s ability to be big and impactful without just going for the cliched sucker-punk or relying on velocity or volume to make its presence felt. No, this is anthemic and writ large, and for all its groove and grit, there is a grace and grandeur threaded through the song, too.
So, if you are looking for a song that touches on the familiarity of rock and roll past whilst still striding into the future, this is for you. Buy this track and play it to death, that is, until “Weight to be Honest” is out. And then play that to death instead.
