There is something wonderfully light and fresh about this new one from AutoCrush, whilst simultaneously slightly reminiscent of some of the finest indie/rock moments of the past. I remember a time when the rock and pop worlds weren’t so far apart, when the former was able to bring robustness to the latter and, in return, benefitted from an extra push of melody and pulse of infectiousness. Many of my favorite sounds from the 80s and the 90s were the product of that creative collision of worlds.
And that is precisely what I hear with “Breathe,” the perfect meeting of musical minds that enabled rock bands to be accessible and pop bands to be credible. As the song’s riff spirals and circles around, as the dynamic ebbs and flows yet somehow maintains drive, groove and energy at the same time, as you wait for that fist-in-the-air chorus to punch in, you are both listening to an echo of pop past and a suggestion of indie future.
“Breathe” is one of those simple celebrations of love. It draws lines between everything from New Wave to post-punk’s, New pop sound to nineties indie-pop. With a bit of luck, along with the album that it calls home, Into The Light, it will help remind people of just how great indie can be when it crosses the borders and learns and perhaps even selectively steals (and why not) from its older sonic siblings.
