It has been nearly six years since Autolux released their excellent full-length debut, Future Perfect. In that time, bands like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Deerhunter have picked up the shoegaze gaze revival torch and run with it. The sonic landscape has changed. These bands are coming out of the woodwork as a result of what Deerhunter has accomplished and the reunion of My Bloody Valentine. So where does all this leave Autolux?
In the time spent waiting, the band did squeak out a couple of tracks. Neither the collaboration with UNKLE or the downloadable single, “Audience No. 2,” (which is on Transit Transit) did much to whet the appetite for more Autolux. So this attempt to make fans rabid with anticipation didn’t really work. But the new album has got to be great then, right?
Eh. That is the word that came into my head at the end of every song. No one track jumps out at you. The album trudges along at one pace, in one key.
Transit Transit is plain yogurt. It is a quilt that has been crafted with no pattern or patches. It’s one color. To single one track out to talk about is impossible as I can scarcely discern one from another.
What comes to mind, though, are the post- Loveless EPs from My Bloody Valentine. The prime difference is that Kevin Shields was trying to be adventurous and off-kilter compared to MBV’s albums. Autolux instead plays it safe and, therefore, reap no rewards.
