Ava Valianti - The Conversation (self-released)

6 May 2026

I don’t want to make every piece I write about Ava Valianti about her age, but this is impressive stuff for one so young. Actually, it is impressive stuff for an artist of any age, so its probably best I just dig in.

If indie-pop has been the place from which she has so far launched her songs, “The Conversation” perhaps suggests that now she has only one foot in that sonic realm; the other she leaves free to step deftly into all manner of adjacent, and not-so-adjacent, areas.

Sure, the song starts in a familiar, acoustic pop place, but it slowly rises through indie moves and shuffling grooves, adding sonic weight and increasingly layered textures deftly, and by the time the brass lines breeze through, there is no small amount of neo-soul vibe swirling about too.

The post-genre world is a fascinating place. I’m not saying that such music couldn’t have been made in the more tribally-affiliated past, but I do think that today artists feel so unburdened by genre and expectation that they feel free to step into such creative pastures right from the off, rather than following a stricter and more demanded creative curve.

“The Conversation” is all the proof of such an argument that you are ever going to need.
