I know we live in an age where the prevailing mood seems to be one of overturning and dismissing what has gone before and establishing some sort of new sonic world order, but thankfully, not every new artist is on board with such an ethic. Not everyone thinks that pop music is a spent force, indie music is too busy admiring itself in the mirror, or that rock music is full of cliches. Some people still think that there is plenty to be done with those established genres, plenty of new places to take them, and in the case of rock music, that someone is Avalon Stone.
Her new single, “Cliffhanger,” clearly shows that she loves all things rock, classic and old school, loud and proud. But the trick is always in finding ways to move things forward. The art is, therefore, to retain the genre’s important elements and still make music that resonates, or in this case roars, with the times. Cliffhanger is the sound of such sonic alchemy in progress, a song that sounds fierce and fresh and fantastic and yet still familiar enough to find fertile ground in existing comfort zones.
By retaining the searing guitars and crunching riffs, the anthemic sonics and driving beats and then adding some contemporary polish, a smart ebb-and-flow dynamic, and a timeless vocal delivery, Stone is not only a breath of fresh air in the rock landscape, but she adds accessibility and infectiousness that will not only breathe new life into the scene but also broaden its appeal beyond the existing fans and aficionados.
