I always find it disappointing when I see a band label themselves “female-fronted.” I mean, I know why it is used, and I understand that a historical imbalance has to be addressed, but why focus on such a specific aspect of a band when the music should be able to do all the talking for you?
I mention this because Awaiting Abigail is that rare thing in rock, a band with a fifty-fifty gender split and even then, they don’t make a big deal about it; we’ve always known, as they do, that girls can rock every bit as hard as the boys, so they do just let the music speak for them.
And “Falling Under”, their latest single, speaks volumes. Taking emotive metal energy and intricate, hard rock grooves, symphonic textures and the echo of a nu-metal vibe, they blend all of these familiar elements into their own unique sound and perhaps continue the story started by bands such as Evanescence and Halestorm, back in the day.
Riffs grind, and bluesy salvos power through, depth-charge bass and kick ass drums drive the song on through changes of pace and poignancy, and scintillating keyboard washes add the requisite polish that marks this out as being the sound of the current age. Part classic rock traditions, part alternative metal futures, a balance of musical evolution and sonic revolution.
It’s healthy to understand where you come from musically, but it pays to have a clear vision of where you are going. Thankfully, Awaiting Abigail has the perfect understanding of both.
