The modern world, both online and in a real, physical sense, has become a reasonably unpleasant place, since things went digital. Driven by the anonymity of the social media world and the access we now have to each other people’s intimate spaces, bullying and backstabbing, gossip, and glee at other people’s misfortune, schadenfreude…as the Germans so eloquently say, have become the norm. “I Hate You” flips the script and gives us a scenario where the antagonist of the piece gets their comeuppance, which sadly isn’t often enough the case in real life.
It’s an important message, one that needs repeating. Although there might be bigger problems in the world today, to a whole swathe of the younger generation, this is their reality, their everyday lives, their world. One that, in extreme and tragic cases, is just as much a life or death situation as any of the bigger headlines.
It’s an anti-bullying anthem delivered via hard rock riffs and metal power-plays, big guitars, and pounding drums. It hits hard both lyrically and musically. And anthem is exactly the right word for this song. This is fist-in-the-air stuff, one of those songs where you unite live crowds in joining in the message. This is the sort of music that acts as a soundtrack to individuals, friends, and even the community fighting back.
Rock music is a powerful and potent force when aligned with such relevant and relatable messages, but it is what Awaiting Abigail does and does brilliantly.
