We have all found ourselves awake in the early hours, worrying about the things that seem to drag us into a perceived abyss and wondering how to shed those burdens. So, since we all find ourselves there from time to time, those moments of 4 am contemplation, confusion, and hopefully ultimately clarity might as well have a soundtrack. ‘Underwater,’ the new single from Awake & Dreaming, is exactly that.
‘Underwater’ is one of those songs that sits between genres, somewhere in those liminal spaces where dream-pop washes up on the shores of alt-rock, where ambient beauty gathers and grows gracefully and gradually until its accumulated sonics carry it into more robust-sounding territory.
But as it rises from drift and dreamscape into something more worldly and weighty, as sonic washes and shimmering guitars join the chiming piano and spacious groove, we head into a more cathartic and clearer place… ironically, it is as the sonic weight increases that the emotional burdens are shed; we find a restful sleep and wake with a renewed sense of direction.
Ahead of their debut album, Inevitable, this Ontario quartet have perhaps dropped the most compelling musical argument for buying a forthcoming album ever.
