I’ve always loved the fact that Backstrom delivers about as definative a country sound as you could hope to find, a sonic experience draped in campfire cowboy cool and Americana authenticity – the real deal. And “Daydreaming” is about as great a country song, a melancholic and reflective Tex-Mex border ballad, as you will have ever heard.
So, it comes as a bit of a shock to find that Backstrom, is actually a musician from Stockholm, Sweden. But then the world is increasingly shrinking, metaphorically speaking, and certainly becoming more culturally and artistically connected, so why should we be surprised that classic music styles and iconic sounds don’t make their way out into the world to inspire music makers, wherever they may be?
But whatever its backstory or wherever the song calls home, there is no denying it is a fantastic piece of country music, one built of drifting pedal steel sonics, cascades of acoustic guitar, meandering violin, and gorgeous atmospherics. And to top it off, what a voice, too!
Bathed in suitably dreamlike sonic moods and vague optimism, even if it is tinged with pathos, escapism and transportive tones, it’s a song that seems to carry the listener across that southern border and into a new life, whether that life is rooted in San Antonio, Swindon, or Stockholm.
