Bad Mary has consistently proven that they are one of those bands that know perfectly how to navigate the pop-rock divide, able to corral the fun and infectiousness of the former genre into kick-ass songs that call the latter home. It’s what they do. Brilliantly.
So, when it comes to choosing a well-known song to cover, “Time Warp” feels like it was written for them, smuggled into the world via the medium of musical theatre, just waiting for the timing to be right, for sonic planets to align, so that we could finally hear their take on it.
And their take is perfect. They leave the natural groove and dance-ability of the original in place and then just set about making everything bigger, rougher, rawer, louder, more attitude-driven. The perfect dance between pop and a hard place! It’s what you imagine the mighty MC5 would have sounded like if, instead of trying to sow the seeds of revolution in late 60’s Detroit, it had instead been the pit band for Richard O’Brien’s original, 1975 stage production.
As young Brad famously said, in what is probably the greatest understatement of all time… “It’s just a party, Janet.”
