Ahead of the album of the same name, BARD gives us a taste of their mercurial mix of classic genres with this latest single. And while some bands aim to rock harder than anyone else, be more soulful, run on more bluesy grooves, or funk more fantastically than the competition, BARD somehow manages to do all that simultaneously. Contrary to the idea that such an approach would make them a Jack-of-all-sonic-trades and master of none, weaving such threads together would be some sort of creative compromise; nothing could be further from the truth. This is masterful stuff.
“Angels Got His Back” runs on one of those cohesive sounds that seem to typify American music, that mercurial blend of home-grown genres – a funky groove, a rock drive, scintillating soulfulness, and timeless and nostalgic blues runs – that seems quintessentially and identifiably from that place.
I’ve never really understood what the term Americana music means, but if it suggests music that reflects the American cultural experience, a soundtrack to life in that country, that is a summation of the musical styles that you associate with that place, then this is undoubtedly it.
