Ahead of a full album of the same name, husband-and-wife duo Battleviews gives us this two-track single to tease the audience and test the water. And what a great brace of songs it is.
The fact that “Last Jump of Summer” sounds like 10000 Maniacs getting down with a mariachi band is reason enough for it to warrant your serious attention. But dig a little deeper, and the reasons to love it keep on coming. Not only a masterclass in poised pop meets delicate indie, a spacious and reflective ambient-Americana piece, but it is also beautifully pathos-infused as it captures those last hours of summer from the point of view of a kid trying to ekk out those last few moments of freedom as the summer vacation comes to an end.
“Cherished Times” then brilliantly flips the perspective. Its hazy, gossamer-light indie-folk sonics capture the joy of the parent watching the above scenario and perhaps reflecting on how quickly summer, childhood, and even life itself pass and so then how important such moments and memories are.
What a gorgeous taste of the album to come. And, on the strength of these two songs, it can come quickly enough.
