I’m not saying that Beau Jennings & The Tigers sound like Springsteen or Petty; it is just that those are the two names synonymous with this type of music. Music that is both celebratory and restless, stories of small towns and small-town people mythologized and amplified into a microcosm of everyday American life in general.
But whereas the likes of Springsteen would have been advocating roaring off into the sunset in search of a new life, or Petty would be discussing the refugee status of those looking for a change, Beau Jennings is happy to revel in the fact that his slice of small-town America, isn’t so bad, that life is, indeed, what you make of it. Beers at the Barracuda, shooting pool, and watching the game with your buddies aren’t so bad ways of letting off steam, and “People In This Town” presents us with a tableau of imagined and ordinary lives, ones that we recognize, ones just like our own.
Throw in some six-string swagger, a boogie-some backbeat, the ebb and flow of that iconic organ wash, and a chorus that demands that you join in and sing along, and you have a pretty neat slice of American rock ‘n’ roll.
