Beauty in Chaos & Julian Shah-Tayler - Kiss Me (Goodbye) (33.3 Music Collective)

15 June 2023

If Julian Shah-Tayler is known as a front runner in modern electro-rock and intellipop scenes and Beauty in Chaos as the keepers of the flame of a more classic, dark, rock and roll sound, then the finding the two of them collaborating on a song is an act of near-genius.

Why? Well, it is opposites, they say, that attract, and in musical terms, putting them in the same creative space allows JST’s poised and cutting edge, alternative, electro-pop vibes to creatively collide with Micheal Ciravolo and the gang’s dark and delicious goth-gaze grooves to create the best of both worlds. Poised pop as the guiding hand for raucous rock? Rock swagger adding attitude and electricity to pop’s often more mainstream ways? The result is fantastic. The musical building blocks might be familiar but the sonic architecture that is created by the coming together of these two forces is simply exquisite.

But why examine too deeply? After all, music is there to be enjoyed, and “Kiss Me (Goodbye)” is the most enjoyable 5 minutes and 21 seconds you can have, sonically speaking anyway. It sparks with glam and groove, with punch and poignancy, with musical elegance and lyrical eloquence. Kiss Me (Goodbye) exists somewhere between pop and a hard place. What better place is there to make music?
