If previous singles, such as “Love Like Medicine,” have seen Becky Crosby pursuing and exploring a more funk-infused, chart-bound pop sound, “Happy Lonely” marks a shift in direction, a not-so-subtle change in gear, and a move into a rawer, rock and roll territory.
Give it a spin, and it feels as if this has been her chosen genre all along, such is its quality and conviction of what’s going on here. Like all good rock and roll, it is built on driving beats and explosive riffs —a blend of staccato spaciousness and on/off dynamics —that both kicks ass and makes the grade.
But more than that, Becky’s voice jumps the generic divide just as effortlessly, a blend of poise and power, punch and purpose all pulling in the same direction. And lyrically, too, there is purpose at work.
Learning to be happy on your own isn’t always easy, but it’s better than being with the wrong person – someone who isn’t present, isn’t faithful, isn’t committed, and isn’t good for you. And anyway, there is a difference between being lonely and deciding to be alone…choice!
Considering this isn’t the place, musically speaking, where we might have expected to find her, it proves beyond doubt that Becky Crosby can head into any generic pastures new that she chooses and make them her own.
Not only an exciting single, but it also makes you wonder where she might go next. And wherever that might be, discerning music fans of all tastes and persuasions will be right there with her, cheering on from the sidelines. I know I will be.
