You can say it’s 60’s garage rock. You can say it is stomping soul. You can say it is 50’s Frat Boy party music, thankfully, without the Frat boys. You can say it is surf sass or a tribute to the roots of rock and roll. You can say what you like about the new one from Beebe Gallini as long as you say it is the next album on your “to be purchased” musical shopping list!
Yes, Beebi Gallini are (is? tenses can be so tricky) back and the new album, “Begged Borrowed and Stealed” is that rare thing, an album built on nostalgia but which feels fresh, funky, fabulous and forward-thinking. Yes, it is an album mainly of covers, but by the time the band has finished their musical makeover, the songs are that perfect blend of the familiar and the bang-up-to-date, comfort-zoning and sonic adventure!
There are emotive torch songs, such as The Accents “Why,” a brilliant showcase for Miss Georgia Peach’s heartaching vocals, garage rock groovers courtesy of “Run Run Run, The Gestures classic here given even more drive and drama and their take on The Kan-Del’s “Cry Girl” pushes the already raucous vibe into the sort of sonic territory that would give the New York Dolls a run for their money.
But there is still room for new material, too, Hey, Honey, sitting seamlessly and authentically into this journey through the great and good of the formative years of modern, popular music.
In short, Begged, Borrowed, and Stealed is a garage rock party platter, a fab and groovy waxing, and a brilliant tribute to garage rock and soul!
