The trio of, Belfi/Grubbs/Pilia, reach the spire of their collaboration on their newest, Dust & Mirrors. With Grubbs and Pilia’s guitars center stage, the unit give clarity to the sonic concepts first examined on 2010’s Onrushing Clouds.
Grubbs’ knack for atypical passages and lucid verse are particularly elevated by Belfi’s elegant restraint and Pilia’s tapestries on “Brick Dust”. Things take on a more developed, aggressive tone on both “The Distance, Cut” and “Ambassador Extraordinaire”, bringing to mind the works of Sonny Sharrock. “The Headlock” hears Grubbs falling into familiar territory before the threesome veer midway into angular harmony.
Dust & Mirrors is a prodigious step forward for the group of Belfi/Grubbs/Pilia, offering both a clearer view of each individual player and the group as a whole.
