Ben Aubergine - Spoke For What I Knew (self-released)

7 July 2025

Like many musicians who spent their formative years making music and pursuing a creative outlet through songwriting, Ben Aubergine eventually found himself pursuing other goals, the adult trappings of life – stability, responsibility, and maturity. That isn’t to say that music ever really left him; he kept playing and refining his songs, and now the time feels right for him to return to such pursuits with renewed focus.

“Spoke For What I Knew” is a smart song, one that sits between piano-led pop and more alt-rock soundscaping, a blend of the former’s accessibility and the latter’s more ornate, weightier sonics.

However, as intricate and alluring as the music is, it is the lyrics, their poeticism, and purpose that are the real charm here; by saying that, I am in no way taking anything away from the tune. Not only is there something wonderfully engaging about the vocals, but there is much that is relatable in the story.

It describes those moments in relationships when two people are at odds, as the honesty of saying what you really feel and what you really mean can bring everything crashing down—those moments when you question whether honesty really is the best policy.

And as the opening gambit of a new musical chapter for Ben, this blend of engagement and relatability, not to mention the unique style – part smart pop, part contagious indie, part understated rock, poetic and poised and poignant – is going to mark him down as one to watch on every discerning music fans radar.
