Blending groove and grace, funk and sophistication, “A Taxi Ride” sits on the edge of so many worlds, musically and otherwise. Raw rock guitars cut through groovesome bass lines, hypnotic electro-rhythms dance through pop-aware soundscapes, and the song’s vibe cuts through the edge of night as the sonic and surreal vehicle heads towards the break of dawn.
But then Betty Moon has never really easily fitted in, which is what makes her sonic adventures so great: it’s not that she doesn’t fit in to genre or scene or style because she won’t conform to the rules and traditions of any one sound; she doesn’t fit in because she is juggling too many.
“A Taxi Ride” is the sound of some gathering magpie-like, all the best sounds and attitudes from the last fifty years – a rock-and-roll stance, a funky feel, a sense of pop accessibility, a soulful seduction, an indie outsiderness – and weaving them into the finest post-genre slice of music.
You may recognize the various sonic elements being played with here; obviously, there is little new under the musical sun, but it is how they are put together which is the real story here. After all, you don’t look at the individual brickwork when marveling at the most magnificent architecture; similarly, whilst you will recognize the various sonic building blocks that make up “A Taxi Ride,” it is the final finessed and funky result which is the only thing that matters.
