Black Pyramid – s/t (MeteorCity)

20 May 2010

Sometimes it seems like stoner metal has reached the end of its road. There’s little evolution in the form anymore, as most bands are content to recycle the typical 70s Sabbath riffcrunch. The ones that do expand the boundaries tend to suffer the usual fate of iconoclasts: critical acclaim but little material success.

BLACK PYRAMID would seem to epitomize the stoner rock dilemma, as the power trio’s debut album is as meat-and-potatoes as they come. Early 70s heavy rock riffs meet thunderous rhythms and vaguely mystical lyrics sung in a raspy blare. And yet…there’s something here that lifts Black Pyramid above the usual psych-metal sludge. It’s hard to point to exactly what it is. Maybe it’s the band’s complete mastery of the form. Maybe it’s the members’ obvious love for the music. Maybe it’s just charisma. Whatever it is, it’s enough to give “No Life King,” “Mirror Messiah” and the epic “Wintermute” a soulful pizzazz that most stoner metal groups this traditional don’t have. Black Pyramid is simply good stuff done well.
