All too often, lyrics are just a story put on top of music, the two usually bearing little relationship to each other. The former just something to sing along to, while the latter serves mainly as a musical vehicle to carry the words. I mention this only because “Club of Sin,” the new one from Black Rose Moves, is the perfect example of the two working in perfect harmony for once.
If “Club of Sin” is a lyrically enticing call to enter an exclusive, dark enclave, one that hints at all manner of unspeakable sin and debauched pastimes, then musically, it also provides the perfect soundtrack to just such a place. So what we get is not just a description of the what might lie within but a taste of what would greet you sonically once you step through its portal.
Gothic riffs coil through the air like razor wire, the beats are punishing, propulsive, and tribal, the rhythms relentless, and the sonics draw you into the unknown and perhaps unknowable. It’s old-school, upbeat, and vibrant darkwave for the modern age.
And what is the “Club of Sin?” A dancefloor? An exclusive club? An attitude? An outlook? A state of mind? It is whatever you want it to be. You decide just how far you want to go.
