If Bog Witch is the musical vehicle through which Wendy DuMond is let loose to run the complete gamut of the musical spectrum from roots to rock to pop to…well, whatever takes her fancy, Blackfoot Daisy is where she joins forces with others to play with a wonderful blend of traditional bluegrass and alternative folk.
Alongside Don Sechelski and Jim Kirkland, the band builds a timeless Americana sound that fits any era, and “Stretch My Plum” is no exception. Taking the songs’ name from a move in Mexican wrestling, but no less soaked in innuendo and double entendre, they wander the soundscape of jugband jams and ragtime melodies, music halls and folk festivals blending guitars with washboards, violins with ukuleles.
And, as brilliantly woven as that is, the song also reminds us of the lost art of close harmony vocals. This blend of wonderfully ragged sonics and precision, and untweaked human vocals, is anathema to much in the modern music world, where excess polish and studio gimmickry reign. You get the feeling that if you stumbled across the band performing this live, it would sound the same as it does here on record. No, it would sound all the better for the experience of music made by…well, without wanting to sound elitist or aloof…proper musician.
