There are two sets of vibes at work in this latest single from Bleach Dreamer, one musical, the other purely atmospheric. The former seems to take its reference points from the shimmering 80’s pop made in the wake of the eighties post-punk explosion, lush and cinematic, blending the old-school analogue ethic with the new wave of digital potential. The latter is harder to pin down but sets the song as a soundtrack to quiet reflection in the early hours, or suggestive of hushed, intimate conversations as the first slivers of light appear in the gaps of a city skyline. Either way, it feels like a half-forgotten tack from the score of a John Hughes movie.
Crepuscular, that’s the word. Something that exists at the changing of the light, a coarse and unweildy-sounding word perhaps, but capturing the sentiment here perfectly.
The song is big but in an understated way. Rather than trying to sucker-punch the listener with boom and bombast, it cocoons them in shimmering swells and radiates cinematic sonics across the soundscape; it is both artful and anthemic. It is pop-friendly but is also something more, something more enveloping, more all-encompassing in a way that most pop isn’t.
Groove meets grace, and nothing short of gorgeous.
