BLOCK - Firefly (Meridian - ECR Music Group)

12 April 2026

Songs are written for so many different reasons, perhaps for as many reasons as there are individual thoughts and life experiences to be had. Songs can be throwaway fun, they can be meaningful and deep, they can make you laugh, they might make you cry, some seek to inform, others merely entertain. BLOCK’s third single and final single before he drops his next album, Love Crash, is all about memory.

Inspired, initially at least, by thoughts of the brother he lost eight years ago, this is not only a tribute to him, but also to all the other beautiful people he has lost over the years. And, in turn, it makes us think about the people no longer in our lives, especially those who, like the title creature, burn bright, burn out, and then disappear before their time.

“Firefly” takes the form of a more folk-infused piece, devoid of the raw guitars and bigger sonics that often shape his songs, a deft finger-picked piece with only the gentlest of additional touches to build a middle-eight change. It is that simplicity of delivery that brings the power, allowing the vocals and the message to remain the focal point, framed and underpinned by the music but never competing for space.

And proof of the effectiveness of “Firefly?” Well, after the first listen to this remarkable song, I had to go and sit in the garden to clear my head, trying not to dwell too long in the middle of a working day on the people absent from my own life. That is the power of a great song, that is the brilliance of “Firefly.”
