Blue Coffee - Dive (self-released)

22 December 2024

Anyone who thinks indie music has had its day, who perhaps believes that pop and alt-rock seem to have squeezed indie music out of the picture in recent times, needs to listen to Blue Coffee. I’m not saying that they look to the past for their sound, but there is as much an echo of the nineties, indie gold age at work here as there is the sound of a forward-thinking sonic vision. But that is fine; all music, to some degree, is a blend of what has gone before infused with new ideas, and that is where we find the band on their latest single, “Dive.”

Built initially from cool swathes of chiming guitar and skittering beats, the song soon kicks into gear and heads off down the indie-rock highway, where coiled riffs and driving beats, relentless bass lines, and big vocals are the order of the day. This is a sound that is both reassuringly familiar and wonderfully fresh.

“Dive” is also a song with a message. Here, the discussion is about climate change and the hope that humanity has not left it too late to save our planet from the point of no return.

Blue Coffee’s music is woven from all manner of great sounds, indie swagger, rock energy, and pop infectiousness being the main ones, but it is also full of its own personal touches and signature sound. It is the sound of evolution rather than revolution, but isn’t that how most music, at least that with longevity, is made?

Dive is the sound of Indie music getting its second wind; who knows where that will take us, but it can only be for the good, don’t you think?
