It is fair to say that Rachelle Garniez’s resume is as rich, varied, and interesting as the music she makes. In a world where most of the press sheets for artists seem to think that coming second in a battle of the bands competition is a big deal, her backstory reads like a classic work of magical realism. Moving through worlds as diverse as that of a Venetian street musician and gypsy flamenco singer, boho New York accordian player and band leader of The Fortunate Few, it’s been one helluva journey. And, of course, it ain’t over yet, not by a long shot.
And, whilst her career has focused on original music, well, except for being part of the three-part harmony, Tom Waits tribute band, VickiKristinaBarcelona Band, with the exception of one new song, Born in Time is a collection of standards.
As always, the two defining factors for such an album is the selection and delivery of the songs. In these regards, she doesn’t put a foot wrong; the numbers she chooses are superb, the delivery sublime, as epitomized by a haunting version of “Lilac Wine,” which finds her in the same gorgeously seductive and melancholic space as Nina Simone’s iconic rendition.
“I’ll Never Be The Same” is full of space and intoxicating atmospherics, distant, muted trumpets, and smoky late-night jazz club vibes. “Down Among The Sheltering Pines” brings some modern sass to a hundred-year-old standard, and the title track pushes the already sedate Dylan number into even more serene realms.
The one original number, “Lucky Day,” then fits so comfortably into the surroundings that you think it is a song you have been listening to your whole life.
A brilliant album from an artist who seems to master any sound or style or genre that her gaze falls upon.
