I love the fact that a band from Manchester, England — a city with a rich musical heritage and a very recognisable, signature sonic style—sounds more like a bunch of Boston indie kids or Minneapolis college rockers, than what their location would suggest. What I’m saying is that you might expect them to sound like Oasis, but thankfully, they sound like Cracker! Thinking outside the box is always a good thing.
“Every Year” is, in its way, a meditation on nostalgia, a song that prompts thoughts about how we might be remembered once we are gone from this earth, what our legacy might be, and people’s memories of us. Big ideas, indeed.
Big ideas need a big tune to carry them. While scuzzy guitars and driving beats characterise the Boxfires sound, it is one also marked by an infectious groove and almost pop-aware accessibility. But all the best music has such contagion at its core, from punk to metal to rap to indie… it doesn’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that… well, melody.
Melody is the name of the game here. It might be replete with bountiful beats and buzzsaw guitars, but I can guarantee that once you have played this two or three times…I defy anyone not to immediately drop the needle again and again and go in for repeat listens… it’s swing and swagger, it’s lilting loveliness and driving deftness will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day…longer perhaps!
