As the saying goes, all music is built by standing on the shoulders of giants. And so if “Shake Your Bangs” is coated in more modern, alt-rock-infused raw and raucous guitar sounds, those delicious tones and textures are built on a recognizable rockabilly foundation that evokes the likes of Perkins and Presley, Holly and Horton.
And so we find Branson Anderson offering the sound of country-rock past blended with rootsy alt-rock future, a growling and grooving salvo of infectious licks and contagious beats.
“Shake Your Bangs” also reminds us how effective simple music can be, and I mean simple in the sense of elegance and understatement, not to imply what he does is easy. In a world where rock music has become bombastic and boorish, pop is over-polished and underwhelming, and indie music is too busy admiring itself in the mirror, Branson Anderson reminds us of the simple sonic truth – less is more. It’s a cliche, perhaps, but cliches exist for the most excellent of reasons.
