“Identity Theft” is a strange sonic beast, wandering between full-blown, tsunamic metal and an almost nursery rhyme delivery, as if someone had thought that it might be a good idea to ask Tim Burton to write children’s ditties for Lordi to perform. But neither the wire-haired Hollywood film goblin nor the ghoulish, Finnish dress-up metallers are behind this; instead, Brocarde, the Oxfordshire, UK-based rock/metal artist and horror influencer, who famously married and eventually divorced Edwardo, the ghost of a Victorian soldier, is responsible for this jarring single.
Exploring further into her unique style, the song ebbs and flows between a beguiling musical theatre sound and incendiary nu-metal onslaughts. It stomps stridently and glitches unexpectedly; orchestral sounds ring out in the background, and walls of metallic guitars threaten to engulf everything. And of course, it soon becomes obvious that the identity theft in question is nothing so mundane as someone trying to use your credit card or hijack a social media account; this is about far more personal intrusions and manipulations.
This isn’t just the usual sonic dynamic at work, the rise and fall of power and volume, the sonic constructions of counterpoint and syncopation. This is a song that is able to teleport violently and dramatically between genres and phase in and out of worlds and dimensions of its own creation.
Anthemic doesn’t even begin to describe its searing, sneering, snarling crescendos; this is sound piled so sky-scrapingly high, so densely, so intrusively that it should be marked on aviation maps to avoid air traffic collisions!
