‘Down to You’ sounds, and indeed feels, like the progeny of all that great music that smoothed and coloured the serene fringes of post-punk back in the day. Not as alien and crystalline as Cocteau Twins, not as claustrophobic as My Bloody Valentine, not as dense as A.R. Kane, but certainly not a million miles away from the Scar era Lush, it presents a modern, seductive, late-night take on those signature sounds.
Erring on the ‘pop’ side of the tag ‘dream-pop,’ it fits as easily into the current commercial world as it does into the record collections of the more discerning and dedicated music fans.
And, like those old reference points, Broken Horses similarly builds new sonic realms. Most music at least adds something to this world; ‘Down To You ‘ creates an alternate one. In its nocturnal hush, its gently chiming guitars, its metronomic beats, its vocal washes and pulsing bass, you find an otherworldly place, a dimension not quite this one, a place sonically broader, deeper, more immersive and welcoming, seductive and lysergic. How can you not want to go there, even if it is for four minutes and fifty-eight seconds?
Music styles never die, but they do evolve; they have to, and ‘Down To You’ is the sound of dream pop finding its new shape in today’s world.
