Pitching itself between the coolly cultish and the commercial…or at least the accessible and appealing to the more discerning mainstream indie-kid, By Million Wires’s latest 5-track EP, Not Over, is an intriguing and intelligent creation. At times wide-screen and cinematic, at others groove-driven and hooky, it is a masterclass in the dynamic shifts, as it moves with ease between the understated and the anthemic… often within the same song.
“Over,” which opens things up, clocks in at just over five minutes; this is a band that is happy to take its time developing its ideas. Here, soundscapes and jangling cascades, heavenly hooks and serene subtleties all ebb and flow and build and break to great effect.
“I Know Better” is the heart of the EP, both chronologically and sonically; brooding beats and a glowering, depth charge bass paint the background, with enough of an array that all the guitars have to do is add deft jangles and delicate lines over the top. Throw in some sonic shade and subtle vocals, and you have the perfect blend of the heartfelt and the harmonious.
Rounding out this quality quintet is “Runaway,” again a song that shows how clever By Million Wires’ sonic world is, as the complex blend of weight and subtlety, light and shade, sophistication and sass weaves together a unique design.
By Million Wires are the type of band that, when they break through into a wider, more mainstream audience, and they will, are going to be spoken about in terms of the exception that proves the rule that the best indie music can be layered and textured and dreamlike and driven, rather than merely obvious. And Not Over is all of those things and more…so much more.
