Calliope Wren - Fading (self-released)

4 July 2024

They say that you should write about what you know. After all, who needs another song about epic adventures into Mordor or battling alien space lords? Not me. Yes, the best songs, and by best, I mean meaningful and honest, come from personal experience, and it is Calliope Wren’s ability to turn her own into not just songs but songs of epic proportions that makes her such a hot property.

Lyrically, the song has a reflective vibe, one borne of those moments when you are trying to remember the good times of a now-lost relationship, trying to cling on to the already-fading memories. It also acknowledges that while holding on to those memories is comforting, it is healthier to work through the healing process and try to move on. It isn’t easy, but it must be done.

With one foot in the rock camp and the other in the indie, she forges a sound that adds an unexpected infectiousness to the former sound and a weight and drive to the latter, which is rarely done this well. Anthemic when it needs to be, delicate when it wants to be, “Fading” is a song written on a grand scale, a brilliant juxtaposition given its intimate and personal nature.

Rock with a heart? Certainly, even if, for now at least, that heart appears to be broken.
