Cam Cole - Rabbit (She's What I Want) (New Age Records UK)

21 October 2025

Cam Cole’s sonic rags to riches story is as old as music itself, except that his is one where the rise from street busker to big stages has partly involved the clever use of social media. But hey, that’s the world we live in, so fair play to him.

And if this musical pilgrim’s progress reflects the changing and forward-thinking nature of the modern artist, his sound echoes lots of earlier influences. He is a man of the contemporary world, for sure, but one who is carrying a torch for some vintage sounds.

As such, his latest single, “Rabbit (She’s What I Want),” is a heady blend of squalling, 60s-infused psych-blues and Lewis Carroll imagery, quirky, off-kilter folk, and the darker end of The Beatles’ output. It’s a song that doesn’t seem to quite belong anywhere, not then, not now, not here, not there, and that intangible and untaggable nature is what makes it such a fascinating experience.

Cam Cole is also a lesson for any artist trying to make it today: Use everything available to you. Just because you are an artist who makes music that takes inspiration from the past, perhaps embraces more analog traditions than digital potential, and is all about playing before live audiences, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t also embrace every social media trick, every promotional opportunity, and climb every rung on the modern music ladder.

Do that, and as well as the tours, the albums, and the expanding fan base, you too might find yourself with a cameo in the Emmy-winning series Ted Lasso!
