Weilding the brilliant, not to mention brilliantly relevant title of “probably the heaviest one-man band in the world,” Cam Cole’s ascendence from London busker to global phenomenon, with occasional detours to further cement his reputation, such as cameo appearances in Ted Lasso, is the stuff of modern music legend.
But all of that would ring hollow if the music didn’t back it up. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that a, for want of a better word, celebrity’s backstory, upon further examination, rang hollow.
Sorry, not this time, Cam Cole is the real deal, and “Ur So Beautiful” is the proof. Blending his trademark swampy, slidy blues guitar with a more modern and multilayered pop-scape, he makes music that is the best of both worlds, accessible and infectious yet oozing musical authority and authenticity.
Balladic and brilliantly blending underground traditions and modern inventiveness, this is the sound of the music of the Mississippi flowing right past the doors of the hottest Camden indie venue… or Kreutzberg, or Austin, or Melbourne, you get the picture.
The fact that Cole has achieved so much, risen so high, yet still makes the sort of music that feels as if you might stumble across it being played in a sparsly attended, underground music club on a wet Thursday evening, yet also enables him to fill big venues, reminds us that you don’t have to sell your soul to get somewhere in modern music. Not if you don’t want to.
It also reminds us that music’s future is in safe hands.
