Anything that reminds me of Wilco is obviously going to be a sound that I gravitate to. Now, I’m not saying that Carl Krausnick is plundering or plagiarising here; far from it, it’s just that he does seem to evoke similar vibes to that great band, that blend of sonic serenity shot through with artful anthemics, dreamy textures layered so deftly and richly that eventually they can do nothing but escape their confines and explode into cool crescendos.
‘Important Questions’ is a reflective song, a person looking back at their own life path and having a conversation with their younger self, someone coming to terms with where they have got to in life and how much of it is the result of deliberate choice or sheer accident. A sonic stock take, if you will.
Sonically, it ticks so many boxes; it is timeless in the way that all those classic songs by seminal artists are – tipping a hat to the likes of Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, and Kurt Vile as it blends its own unique musicality and acoustic traits. And I can’t think of many better reference points to have thrown at you.
This first single from Krausnick’s second album to follow will not only prompt all discerning music fans to make a mental note to pick it up as soon as is humanly possible, but will also make them hunt down his debut, Dining Companions, as soon as they have finished reading this review.
