As the title might suggest, the new one from Carrie Abyss is based on thoughts of what man’s debt to women might be, what one gender has gained from the other’s sacrifice, how being the rock upon which society is often based women have afforded men, sometimes consciously, willingly and purposefully, sometimes not, the opportunity to be able to fully explore their potential. Some might see that as feminism, but I see it as fact. Carrie Abyss, I suspect, sees it as a balance that needs to be addressed, a debt that should be paid in full. She is not alone.
And so, using her trademark blend of dark, gothic leaning pop and raw-edged rock, poised and purposeful grooves, and a brilliantly effective on/off dynamic, she builds a gorgeously sensual and snake-like, darkwave-infused, alt-pop anthem. Rather than make her point wrapped in such cliches as volume and velocity, “Man’s Debt” moves slowly and surely, shimmering equally with menace and meaning, allowing her to deliver her sonics and words with exacting precision, each beat, each syllable landing with impact.
Some might consider this single to be hardly the stuff of pop music, even alt-pop music, but in a world of dance routine-led songs and guest rappers, of landfill indie and throwaway singles, this is exactly the sort of music that needs to be flooding the mainstream charts. Wouldn’t that be something?
Buy. This. Now.
Make. It. Happen.
Be. The. Change.
Embrace. The. Dark.
