Catlea - Why Them? (Warning Shot)

6 March 2025

This fifth release from Catlea’s latest album, Language Barrier, is a genre-bending affair, to be sure. It is the sound of pop music gathering around it everything it needs to compete with the indie scene, and then that indie song blending melody and muscle in the way that rock music has always done so well.

The result then, is “Why Them?” combining the best of all those worlds—the infectiousness and immediacy of pop, the effortless coolness and attitude of indie music, and the punch and potency of rock music. It has it all. It even runs on the sort of groove and rhythm that will see it do well on the dance floors of the alternative club scene.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, it also has a message, a mature one at that. It begs questions about our own insecurities and soul-searching while also looking to others and asking poignant questions about their motives and needs, their own insecurities and jealousies, too.

Genres adapt and evolve with time, fashions change, and the zeitgeist blows one way then another, but “Why Them?” feels like it is above such fickle fates, being a song that offers all things to all people, providing they are broad-minded enough, smart enough and cool enough to see the song for what it is. Not only the sound of the here and now and the echo of genres fracturing and reforming according to new designs but the sound of the music world moving on into a bright new future.
